This masterclass for British Screen Forum Future Leaders will be led by our resident Copyright expert Prof. Guido Westkamp (Professor of Intellectual Property and Comparative Law, QMUL). The session will cover the main elements of copyright law and its architecture with the aim of providing participants with a basic understanding of how copyright law operates and its inner logic. We will cover protection and originality; economic (reproduction, communication to the public, distribution) and moral (right to object to derogatory treatments) rights; and, by way of a brief overview, selected defences (limitations and exceptions) including the notion of fairness. We will also address some basic aspects of licensing (individual and collective) and ownership. The second part of the masterclass will be an exploration of a case scenario.
