Exclusive Access Policy Roundtable with Baroness Stowell on Large Language Models (LLMs) in the Screen Sectors

On: Wednesday 1 November 2023 from 10.00am – 11.30am (registration from 9.30am)

At: Central London location (W1F) AND via Video Conference

For: British Screen Forum Members and Associate Members only

We are delighted to announce an Exclusive Access Policy Roundtable with Baroness Stowell of Beeston, Chair, Lords Communications & Digital Committee. The Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into Large Language Models (LLMs) and its Chair has requested a private roundtable with British Screen Forum members following our recent submission to their call for evidence.

Baroness Stowell is particular interested in exploring with Members the following questions:

  • How extensive is the anticipated impact of LLMs (and wider generative AI) on the screen industries?
  • Would it be helpful for businesses to have a clear political steer about the status of large AI firms using rightsholder content to train their models and whether the Government intends to support/content such practices? Or should we wait for legal challenges and see what court rulings say?
  • Should the Committee advocate for or against a pay-for system that would require AI developers to check if rightsholder content is being used, and offer opt-outs or compensation? Would such an approach stifle innovation and competition, or support it?
  • Is there sufficient support for R&D in this space?

The agenda will reflect these questions and also provide space for Members to raise any other issues they may have in relation to the inquiry.
